Das Institut für Geschichte der Arabisch-Islamischen Wissenschaften an der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität wurde am 18.5.1982
eröffnet. Die gleichnamige Stiftung, die den materiellen Rahmen des Instituts absichert, wurde bereits am 10. Februar 1981 ins
Leben gerufen. Zu den Gründungszielen zählt, die dem arabisch-islamischen Kulturkreis zukommende Stellung in der universalen
Geschichte der Wissenschaften in Forschung und Lehre bekannt zu machen.
The Institute for the History of Arabic-Islamic Science at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University was inaugurated on 18th of May, 1982.
The foundation by the same name, securing the funding of the institute, had already been incepted on the 10th of February, 1981.
One of the foundation objectives is to spread the knowledge of the position that the Arabic-Islamic cultural sphere rightly derserves
within the universal history of sciences in research and teaching.

To give a general impression of the varied publication projects the following items shall be mentioned:
- die Zeitschrift für Geschichte der arabisch-islamischen Wissenschaften, seit 1984 bisher 18 Bände / the Journal
of the History of the Arabic-Islamic Science, 18 volumes since 1984 to date,
- eine Reihe Texte und Studien von Angehörigen des Instituts und Fachkollegen aus dem In- und Ausland, 27 Bände
seit 1984 / a series of Texts and Studies by members of the institute and professional colleagues from within and outside the country, 27 volumes since 1984,
- die Bibliographie der deutschsprachigen Arabistik und Islamkunde in bisher 27 Bänden seit 1990 / the Bibliography of Arabic
and Islamic Studies in German language in 27 volumes since 1990 up to now,
- eine Reihe von Faksimileausgaben arabischer Quellenschriften, welche bisher entweder überhaupt unbekannt, schwer oder gar nicht
zugänglich oder noch nicht ediert waren, bisher 169 Bände / a series of facsimile editions of Arabic manuscript sources that
have been either totally unknown, inaccessible or only very difficult to be found, or that were as yet inedited, 169 volumes so far.
Um der Fachwelt die Forschung zu erleichtern, wurde am Institut kurz nach seiner Gründung mit einer umfangreichen und noch nicht
abgeschlossenen Arbeit begonnen, dem Nachdruck vergriffener Primärquellen, ihrer Übersetzungen in europäische Sprachen und dazu
verfasster Studien und Aufsätze, in chronologischer Folge und systematischer Anordnung. Innerhalb dieses Projekts sind bisher die
Arbeiten auf den Gebieten herausgegeben:
In order to facilitate research for scholars of the various subject matters, the institute started right after its foundation the extensive and
not yet concluded project of reprinting out-of-print primary sources, their translations into European languages, as well as relevant studies and
articles, in chronological sequence and systematic order. Within this project, work in the following fields has menawhile been published:

Kurz nach der Eröffnung des Instituts hat sich der Gedanke entwickelt, die im arabisch-islamischen Kulturkreis aus dem
griechischen und anderen Kulturkreisen der Spätantike übernommenen und weiterentwickelten oder auch neu entstandenen Instrumente
und technisch-wissenschaftlichen Geräte, die bis auf einen kleinen Rest verloren sind, auf Grund von Beschreibungen und
Abbildungen in den Quellen oder auch nach erhaltenen Exemplaren nachzubauen.
Shortly after the institute's inauguration the idea came up to reconstruct instruments and technical-scientific devices - most of the originals being
lost - according to decriptions and illustrations in the souces or by copying surviving specimen. These devices had been adopted from the Greek
and other cultural spheres of late antiquity and developed further, or were newly developed in the Arabic-Islamic cultural sphere.
Die Sammlung umfaßt etwa 800 Exponate (Nachbauten und Neuerwerbungen), die zwei Stockwerke des Institutes füllen.
Sie werden in folgenden Abteilungen ausgestellt: Astronomie, Geometrie, Physik, Technik, Optik, Geographie, Chemie, Nautik, Medizin, Architektur, Mineralogie und Musik.
The collection consists of approximately 800 exhibits (reconstructions and a few antique objects) filling two floors of the institute building.
They are displayed in the following departments: Astronomy, Geometry, Physics, Technology, Optics, Geography, Chemistry,
Nautical Science, Medicine, Architecutre, Mineralogy and Music.
Ein Katalog der Musikinstrumente ist im Jahre 2000 erschienen.
Kataloge der übrigen Abteilungen sind unter dem Titel Wissenschaft und Technik im Islam, 5 Bände, in Deutsch und
Französisch 2003 erschienen, eine englische Übersetzung ist 2011 erschienen. Nähere Angaben bei
