The research project EPRODESERT (Evaluation of Processes Leading to Land Degradation and Desertification Under Extensified Farming Systems in North-East Spain) has been initiated in spring 1995 in order to study the reasons and consequences of soil erosion and land degradation on abandoned fields and areas under extensified land use in North-East Spain. Main emphasis is put upon the processes and interactions of geomorphodynamics and vegetation succession on selected test sites between the High Pyrenees and the Ebro Basin. Research methods include ground survey of vegetation cover and life forms, actual geomorphodynamics and numerous soil parameters, experimental measurement programmes on water and wind erosion as well as investigations into the socio-economic circumstances of land use changes. Another core issue is the aerial photographic monitoring by an unmanned, tethered hot-air blimp which provides large-scale image material for digital processing, mapping and GIS analysis. Next to the development of geo-ecological criteria catalogues and evaluation schemes for resource management, the main aim of the project is the documentation and comprehension of the relationships between vegetation succession and geomorphodynamics on the abandoned fields in the study area, thus enabling in turn to deduce future evolution of soil erosion processes from the state and dynamics of vegetation cover.

The investigations are coordinated by Dr. Johannes B. Ries, Institute of Physical Geography of Frankfurt University. They are carried out together with Dr. Irene Marzolff and a team of students and are supervised by Prof. Dr. W. Andres. There is close cooperation with the Institute of Physical Geography of Freiburg University (Prof. Dr. R. Mäckel, Dipl.-Geoökol. M. Seeger, Section on Applied Physiogeography of the Tropics and Subtropics (APT)) as well as with Spanish partners from the Instituto Pirenaico de Ecología (IPE/CSIC) in Zaragoza and the Departamentos de Geografía and Ciencias de la Tierra of Zaragoza University. The project is funded by the German Research Society DFG under the name of "Landnutzungswandel, Erosion und Desertifikation in Nordostspanien".

In October 2001, the EPRODESERT research group will host a bilingual Spanish-German workshop on land use change and land degradation in Spain.
